Cloud computing is one of the best technologies to happen to small businesses in the last ten years. In the past three years alone, the number of small businesses that have adopted integrated cloud software into daily business operations has risen by 15 percent. As the cloud continues to redefine the small business playing field, it’s clear that the 37 percent of small businesses that are using cloud technologies are performing better than their peers.
Microsoft recently published the results of a survey of 4,000 small businesses in a compelling infographic. The results show that small businesses that adopted cloud technologies grew faster, made more money and hired more people. This proved to be true across all industry sectors, with tech-savvy small businesses creating jobs almost two times as fast as other small businesses.
The results of Microsoft’s survey complement our most recent survey. Our research found that just like any other business, the top two priorities for small business owners are revenue growth and attracting new customers. These top two priorities can be met when small businesses look internationally and expand globally. To a small business owner this may seem like a daunting task, but cloud technologies make expansion achievable. Microsoft’s infographic reveals small businesses that use the cloud are six times more likely to have cross border customers. This goes hand-in-hand with our research. Only one-third of the small business owners we surveyed offered services and products internationally, which shows small businesses are not pushing into foreign regions, and are unaware of how cloud technologies can help them do so.
If you still aren’t convinced, the infographic illustrates one last important data point that should make you question how you will stay competitive if your small business has yet to adopt the cloud. Small businesses in developing countries actively using cloud technologies are as quick as their counterparts in developed markets to embrace new tools, and in some cases, excel past them. With only 60 percent of tech leaders in developed markets using cloud services, communication tools and enterprise resource planning software compared to 80 percent in emerging markets, developing markets are likely to outpace and outgrow those small businesses that are not using cloud software solutions.
